Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born on October 20, 1964, she is the 49th Vice-President of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and the highest ranking female official in U.S history. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally, she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her professional career started with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later promoted to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. The office was named San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in the year 2010. In 2014, she was re-elected. From 2017 to 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the second African American woman to serve in Congress and the first South Asian American American to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, Harris fought for health care, federal de-scheduling and the legalization of cannabis which could lead to the citizenship for immigrants who are not legally documented, as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. Her name is well-known due to her direct questions to Trump government officials during Senate hearings.
